Three documentary films across Rwanda, Kenya, and India, shot and delivered in three weeks for an international awards audience. Complex finance, told as human stories.

The brief

Inclusive finance is hard to make people feel. Microinsurance, microfinance, the mechanisms that let a farmer recover from a bad season or a shopkeeper weather a shock, the impact is profound, but explained on paper it stays abstract. Mechanisms, not people.

InFiNe needed the opposite. Three films, each spotlighting a winner of an inclusive finance competition, to be screened for an international institutional audience at the awards show. The films had to translate complex financial systems into something an audience could actually connect with: real lives, real consequences, lived experience rather than explanation.

The constraint

The hard constraint was time. Three films, shot across three countries, written, edited, and delivered, in roughly three weeks end to end. A two-week production sprint across Rwanda, Kenya, and India, then each film turned around and delivered within three weeks of shooting, in time for the show. No margin.

The approach

The only way to make financial mechanisms feel human is to stop filming the mechanism and start filming the people inside it. So the entire approach was field-driven: on-location interviews, real environments, and storytelling built on trust and proximity rather than narration or abstraction.

No voiceover explaining how microinsurance works. Instead, the people it works for, telling it themselves.

The method

The Rwanda film is the clearest example of the method. It centers on RADIANT YACU Ltd., the country's first dedicated microinsurance company and winner of the European Microfinance Award 2025. Rather than explain what RADIANT YACU does, the film tells it directly through the voices of the people it serves: farmers, shopkeepers, cooperative leaders. What accessible insurance actually means to them, how it supports recovery after a loss, how it protects dignity, how it builds long-term resilience. The financial concept is never stated abstractly because it does not need to be. You see it in the people.

End to end

Working this way across three countries on a sprint timeline meant the production had to be lean and completely self-contained: field production, directing, interview-led storytelling, cinematography, editing, and delivery, all handled end to end. On a schedule this tight, across this much geography, that is not a limitation. It is the only way it gets done. One person carrying the whole chain means no coordination overhead between countries and one consistent storytelling sensibility across all three films.

The result

Three documentary films, each delivered on the three-week deadline, screened for an international institutional audience at the awards show.

The films did what the brief asked: they made inclusive finance land emotionally for a room of people who normally engage with it as policy and numbers. The clearest measure was the reaction in the room, the work connected with an audience that knows this sector intimately, and it connected on a human level rather than a technical one. For films built specifically to translate abstraction into lived experience, screened in front of the people who fund and shape that sector, that response was the entire point.

"I watched the final film and I was in tears. Mark took something we struggle to communicate every day and made it human. It said everything we wanted to say, and more."
